Thematic approach
In a thematic approach, the classification is based on themes that are relevant in the given situation; in geographical terminology, the project area is divided into a series of formal single-factor areas. One theme could be terrain form (Figure 6.3), another the pattern of built structures, a third based on the presence of hedges and woodland, and a fourth based on the presence of wetlands and streams. Next, the four layers (or sheets) are placed on top of the basic map and a new, composite classification map is drawn up.
The aim of the analysis is to develop a classification that is relevant in its content, logical in its structure, and legible and easy to understand. These are not always easy to align. A good place to start is to begin the composite classification by outlining areas with congruent boundaries, that is, areas where boundaries based upon several different themes are congruent and thus reinforce each other and are not in doubt. From here, the next step is to identify the more definite and obvious individual thematic boundaries that are most relevant to the purpose of the study. This leaves the most difficult and ambiguous choices till last, which is where the expert’s experience and judgement become most significant. However, it is also where individual interpretations become most influential, and so is often a phase where dialogue and discussion is particularly valuable.
In the Danish LCA, the classification of character areas is based on the identity of the landscape given by the characteristic elements, patterns and spatial-visual aspects, starting with the geomorphology, soils and terrain, and supplying the first-draft classification with land cover and spatial-visual layers. If the characteristic elements and spatial-visual aspects are composed of steep terrain and clearly enclosed fields, next to an open agricultural plain and woodlands, for example,
